Leeds Print Festival

"The pursuit of pleasure"    Anthony Burrel.

More than anything, spending my weekend at the Leeds Print Festival put everything into perspective.  I need to remember to keep everything in check and actually enjoy what i'm doing, otherwise what is the point?  Slightly heavy, but ultimately sincere.  Stay interested.

We were given a paper portfolio by Anthony Burrel:

Enterprise Lecture 7 / / Don't get ripped off.

Copyright matters.

Copyright it your sole right to produce copies of your work.

Protect your ideas.  Make a living from your work.

Copyright symbol:

What is intellectual property?
Intellectual property refers to creations of your mind.
Symbols; names; images; artwork; cocktails etc.

Patents:
Patents apply to new inventions.  Apply only to things that work in a way that have not before, i.e.machinery; medicines etc.
In 1714 Henry Mill took out the first patent (no.385) for a typewriter in England.
The tremelo device for stringed instruments.  C.L.Fender.

Trade Marks:
Trade marks and logos.
TM.

Have to send specifics to intellectual property office.  Would have to insert the 'TM' somewhere.  Means the logo is under investigation.  Once it is found that there are non of the same logos within the same subject matter means that they are then given the registered trademark logo.

Registered Designs:
Something that appears to be new.  For example, skins on a laptop.

Copyright is automatic.  It is entirely down to you to look after your work.  The only legitimate way is to date your work with the copyright logo.

Fair use legislation:
You cannot use other peoples work in any shape or form for commercial gain.  This is not fair use.  Either contact the person to get permission.  Music sampling is a part of this.

How to secure copyright now:
Add the symbol, your name and a date.  Keep a log of significant creations.  Keep track of everything you have.  Start a log book.  Date; Title of the piece; Location.
If you do not keep track of copywritten pieces, then it is difficult to fight a lawsuit.  Keep organised.
Proof of where it was first created.

How long do they last?
Patents last a maximum of 20 years.
Trademarks and logos- forever, renew every ten years.
Design Rights - up to 25 years, renew every five years.
Copyright - until 70 years after death.

Creative Review Press Ad.

Using Sadie Thompsons link on Moodle we looked into pricing and guides on Creative Review advertising.  We had to logically think about what we could afford, keeping in mind what kind of business we are, and what kind of audience we will be looking to interest.

A double page spread / / single page / / half page was out of the question.  Not only for the money but for the fact that we are playing on the idea that we are a small collective of designers who want a close relationship with their clients.  A smaller Ad would speak more clearly to these people, they could relate to it.

TopTen / / Design Direction

Today we looked again into what direction our animations would be going in.  We had another crit based on how we had progressed since yesterday.

I have a lot to do, however, my direction is clear, it's just a case of seeing if my ideas are possible within AferEffects.

TopTen / / Design Direction Crit

Enterprise Meeting

We had half an hour to come up with a name for our company / / a slogan / / and what we're all about / / the ten main attributes of our company.

We started off coming up with words that we wanted to be associated with; i.e. dynamic / craft / insight etc.  The one we liked the most was the word 'craft'.  We chose this as our company name.

Enterprise Lecture 6; Don't just get a job! / / Why not?

Very competitive in the job market in the current economic climate.

To set up own business:
- Low risk
- Specialisation
- Niche
- If circumstances change, go get a job.  There are other options.

BE PASSIONATE.  When things are difficult you have to want to fight for it.

Don't just look at the skills you've got- look at the skills you need.  Do what you do well, and collaborate with others for your weaknesses so you can learn and grow.

What is a business plan?

Why do we need one?

Where to find a business plan?
- Any high st bank
- Arts Council (more community based / / social enterprise)
- Writing a business plan: businessballs.com / / businesslink.gov.uk

Where to find funding?
Funding landscape has changed considerably in the last few years.
Banks no longer funding loans for small businesses.

- Help others receive grants that could pay your wage.  I.e. non profit organisations that could do with a site update.  These organisations could be in line or a grant.  Sorted.
- Crowd funding
- Cooperative?

 How to get organised?
- in a team?
- alone?
- employee?

Meredith Belbin: Organisational theory.
9 different types of people within a team.

All are (arguably) necessary for a business / / project / / team to work efficiently and successfully.
